Five Sharp

Nut-free Sunday dinners

For a nut-free household the danger is rarely a bowl of almonds; it is the pesto on the pasta, the romesco under the fish, the frangipane in the tart. Every plan here was checked component by component for tree nuts and peanuts in any form — whole, ground, as a flour, a milk, a butter or a paste. Coconut and seeds like sesame are allowed; if your household avoids those too, read the ingredient list rather than the tag. Almost-fits below are usually one garnish away.

What counts: No tree nuts or peanuts in any component — including pesto, romesco, satay, praline, marzipan and nut flours or milks. Coconut and seeds are allowed.
